I show the video in my multiplication classrooms. But i don't explain it. Kids are encouraged to view the video again and again and understand the process of solving equations using fingers. Its fun to watch the kids discuss, go back and forth, agree-disagree. This exercise puts the onus of learning on the student, shifting the onus of learning onto the learner is one of my favourtie classroom strategy.
With my first graders we work with pegboards to understand power of multiplication with its impact quick counting. Kids create a 3X8 peg block on the board and learn to read it also as 8X3. This activity is repeated and reinforce with a powerpoint presentation for the same concept.
